This is diy garden ideas or diy garden projects for balcony. My house is an apartment with a balcony. I started growing tomatoes, green chillies, spinach and fenugreek leaves a year ago. But then I got interested in growing sunflowers and flowers in general. I get direct sunlight in my balcony which makes growing plants so much better in the winters. But in the summer in a gulf country, which is where I live, it gets pretty hot and last year it burnt my vegetables. So I decided to grow flowers instead of vegetables and only the seasonal plants.
Enough about me, let's talk about what all you can grow in your balcony. You can follow this youtuber if you want daily tips on how and whys and whats of a garden balcony. She gives some amazing ideas and advice on her channel.
1) You can grow a bougainvillea on you balcony railing
You can start with growing a bougainvillea plant and letting it swirl all around your balcony railing. It looks so rich from the outside. But I should tell you that you will need someone to cut off the extra growth of the plant once it starts running down your balcony to your neighbours' balcony. Bougainvillea plants are cheap and you can find them anywhere.
I think growing tomatoes are the easiest, I can say because I've done it. You can buy seeds from the nursery but you can do grow a plant with one tomato you have in your fridge. all you need to do it cut thin slice, two will be enough, make sure the seeds are there in the slices, place them in a planting pot (which has holes at the bottom) with soil all the way up the pot. After putting the slices, you cover them up 1 inch up with soil and water nicely. Leave the pot in a sun lit area. Do not over water your plants nor let them dry up too much. Check everyday by putting your finger in the soil. If there is wet soil, then you do not need to water the plant.
For all other vegetables and fruits you can use the same method or you can buy seeds from the nursery. But before planting any vegetables, get informed well because all plants have different requirements.
3) Make your own compost
Making your own compost is the best way to give all the nutrition to your plants. A good compost will help plants to grow faster and the fruits will be delicious. You need a ventilated container. A wooden or a plastic container is fine, just drill some holes on the bottom and sides of the container for ventilation. But the container should have a tight lid on because the smell of the compost can attract unwanted animals and birds. The container should hold up atleast a gallon of compost. You can find some good compost containers here.
Everyday you can add you're food wastes like peeled vegetables skins, oats, waste paper, but I would suggest white plain papers or cardboard pieces, eggshells, banana peels etc. There has to be some balance between nitrogen and carbon dioxide. A good compost will take time, maybe around 6 months. You need to mix the compost around every now and then too.

4) Grow Herbs
Growing only herbs like fenugreek leaves, spinach leaves, dill leaves, curry leaves, coriander leaves and mint leaves can be so refreshing. Growing coriander leaves and mint or parsley should be a must if not all. We all use garnishing leaves and they are best used fresh.
