Being at home with a toddler whole day can be challenging not only for the parent, but the child as well. As a stay at home mom myself, I understand the frustration I have when I have a ton of house work along with a child next to me who wants attention, entertainment and engagement from me. I would love to do all that only if someone came and helped me with the other chores!!!
I mean what can you do the whole day? Our extremely bored kids are stuck to the phone screen then. I wouldn't say the children don't learn anything from watching videos, but it does sometimes lead to other problems such as behavioral problems, sleep disturbances, attention and social development of a child.
Keeping a routine is the key to keeping a child engaged and active on everyday basis. Asking them to help you around the house will also keep them busy and happy.
I ask my son to help me with laundry like pull out the clothes, cling them up on the drying rack. Organizing the shoes in the shoe rack. Putting the dry dishes in their drawers, helping me put on the bed sheets by pulling them from a side (it doesn't matter if they do it properly or not), wiping clean the dinning table after supper.
I have come up with some fun activities that you can do with your child during the weekend or on holidays.
1) Making Slime at Home
If your child likes to play with slime, you can make one at home. It can be a an activity where they can pour and mix the ingredients. They will be amazed and proud of what they made in the end. If you type how to make slime at home in google, you will find a bunch of different recipes on the internet. But I like this one in particular. So click here to see the recipe.
2) Frozen Animals
Carefully put your child's favorite animal or toy inside a balloon and then fill it up with water and tie the balloon. Put this balloon in the freezer and let it become ice. Once the water turns into ice, rip of the balloon and let your child crack the ice with a small play hammer.
3) Make a bird house together
You can cut out the cardboard box pieces for a cute small bird house. Your child can help with the sticking of the pieces together. Click here for the method.
4) Make Paper Mache Plates and Bowls
You need bulk waste paper in this activity. You can soak the paper overnight or at least an hour in water before the grind them up in a mixture jar. Add glue to the mache and stick the mache to a greased plate or bowl and leave it to dry overnight. Your plate will be ready the next day. You can paint it too! Here is a video to show you how to do it.
5) Bake with your kids
I'd suggest to do this only if you have a calm kid (joking). I definitely get a bit frustrated if my son does something that would mess the whole recipe up or make a mess in general in the kitchen. But it's an idea, try it!
6) Play a balance game
Like we all played when we were small, teach your child balance by putting a small lemon or lime in a spoon and letting them walk with the spoon in their mouth without letting the lemon fall. Another one is walking with a book on their heads.
7) Indoor basketball
Alright if you want to buy a kit of indoor basket ball, you can click here. What I did at home is cheap and simple, I put up a polythene bag on my door knob where the mouth of the bag remains open (like a basket). I placed a distance mark on the floor and let my son shoot into the bag from that distance.
